LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. – Barton College gave up four second-half goals in falling to host Chestnut Hill College, 5-0, in both teams' 2016 season-opener on Friday.
The Griffins enjoyed a 10-1 advantage in shots over the game's first 30 minutes, one of those resulting in a goal by Cecilia DuMond on a penalty kick following a Barton foul in the box.
Barton freshman keeper Megan Bolick recorded five of her eight saves in the first half to keep the Lady Bulldogs within one at intermission. However, Chestnut Hill scored again just over four minutes into the second period, then tacked on two more goals in the next six minutes to put the game away.
A late offensive push by Barton left the Lady Bulldogs trailing in shots by just one at the end of the match, 18-17, but Griffins keeper Meghan Guagenti posted nine saves in preserving the shutout for Chestnut Hill.
Barton will take Saturday off before returning to action on Sunday in Wilmington, Del., where the Lady Bulldogs will square off against Goldey-Beacom College. The two teams met last year on a neutral field at University of Mount Olive, with the Lady Bulldogs claiming a 1-0 win on then-freshman Ellen Jayne's first collegiate goal.
