WILSON, N.C. – The women's lacrosse match between Barton College and Emmanuel College scheduled for Saturday, April 14, at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex has been cancelled and will not be made up.
A rash of injuries to Barton's team has left the Lady Bulldogs with just eight healthy players available for the contest. A starting lineup typically includes 12 players.
"Student-athlete welfare comes first," said Todd Wilkinson, Barton's director of athletics. "In not being able to field a team of at least 10 players, we would put our remaining healthy players at considerable risk of injury to themselves. I know our players are disappointed they will not have the opportunity to play. They have shown great resolve and strength in battling through a number of matches short-handed already this year. However, in consideration of their safety, I made the difficult decision to cancel Saturday's match."
Per NCAA rules, the match will be considered a "no-contest" for NCAA records. However, since the contest is a league match, Conference Carolinas is allowed to charge Barton with a loss and give Emmanuel a win for conference standing purposes only if it so chooses.
Barton is currently 5-7 overall and 3-4 in league play.
