Barton women’s golf tied for 11th place after first round of Converse spring tourney

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Barton College women's golf team is tied for 11th out of 19 teams after the first round of the Converse Spring Invite by Founders FCU, which was hosted by Converse College on Monday at Carolina Country Club.

The Lady Bulldogs combined for a team score of 335 on the 5,881-yard, par-72 layout. Sophomores Sydney Turner and Kelsey Woodall led the way for Barton, both carding rounds of 82 to tie for 34th in a field of 98 players. Freshman Clare McMahon produced an 85 to tie for 52nd, and sophomore Maria Garcia delivered a round of 86 to tie for 60th. Barton dropped the score of senior Abby Glover, who fired a 104 to tie for 93rd.

Barton is tied with Trevecca Nazarene for 11th place. The two squads trail 10th place Erskine College by four strokes and lead the two teams tied for 13th place – Catawba College and the Converse "B" team – by two shots. Belmont Abbey College and Pfeiffer University are one more shot back in a tie for 15th place, leaving seven teams within seven strokes of each other heading into Tuesday's final round.

King University leads the tournament with a 315, one shot ahead of Lincoln Memorial University and three shots ahead of the "A" team of host Converse.

Marley Felthousen of Converse holds the individual lead following a 73. She leads a trio of players tied for second place by two strokes.

The tournament will conclude with Tuesday's second round.
