ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (5-0) kept its perfect record intact after pulling out a 63-58 road win over Elizabeth City State (2-3) Monday evening at the R.L. Vaughan Center.
The Bulldogs received a rare triple-double from sophomore center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.) – 12 points, 14 rebounds and 11 blocked shots – while senior all-league forward Kianna Wynn (Knightdale, N.C.) led all scorers with 26 points including 24 after intermission in the victory. Wynn averages 21.8 points per game so far this year.
Elizabeth City State was led by Denayia Holmes (Hopkinsville, Ky.) with 13 points but the Vikings shot just 34 percent (21-of-62 from the field).
The Bulldogs - off to their best start since winning their first nine games of the 2010-11 campaign – held a 52-41 edge in rebounding and forced the Vikings into 20 turnovers. Junior guard Summer Baer (Fleming Island, Fla.) hit three treys for nine points for the Bulldogs as well.
Barton led by as many as 11 points – 48-37 with 1:25 left in the third period – and was able to withstand an Elizabeth City State rally to win. The Vikings used a 12-0 run over the final two quarters to take the lead but Wynn gave the Bulldogs the advantage for good with a lay-up for a 57-56 margin with 1:56 left.
Barton returns home to take on Chowan on Monday, November 26, at 6:00 p.m., while Elizabeth City State hosts The Apprentice School on Wednesday, November 28, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
