WILSON, N.C. – The Barton women's basketball team (3-0) came up big in its 2018-19 home opener with an 87-58 victory over Saint Augustine's (0-2) Tuesday night at Wilson Gymnasium. Barton has won its first three games of the year for the second straight season.
Barton senior forward Kianna Wynn (Knightdale, N.C.) led all scorers with 31 points to go along with 10 rebounds while senior guard Dinah Neal (Browns Summit, N.C.) neared a double-double as well – 14 points and nine assists – as the Bulldogs raced to a 49-25 advantage at halftime and never looked back in the win.
Barton took control in the second quarter as the home squad outscored Saint Augustine's by a 27-10 margin and led by as many as 36 points late in the second half: 85-49 with 2:53 remaining on a lay-up by Neal.
The Bulldogs also held a decisive advantage on the boards – 60-33 – and was spearheaded by the efforts of sophomore center Shanika Peterkin (Virginia Beach, Va.). Peterkin finished with eight points, 18 rebounds and three blocked shots while Barton's defense limited Saint Augustine's to just 33 percent shooting (25-of-74) for the contest.
The Falcons had three players in double figures including 12 points and four assists from Kamya Renwicks (Baltimore, Md.).
Barton hits the road to take on Coker in Hartsville, S.C., on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., while Saint Augustine's hosts Clark Atlanta on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., as well.
