Mount Olive softball takes two from Barton in the Bulldogs’ home finale

WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (16-29, 5-13) suffered a Conference Carolinas doubleheader setback to Mount Olive (27-17, 12-8), 6-3 and 6-0, Friday afternoon in the home finale for the Bulldogs at Jeffries Field.

Game One – Mount Olive 6, Barton 3
Trailing by a 1-0 score, the Trojans took control with a four-run fifth inning including the game-winning, bases-clearing double by Eileen Barrera (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.).  Charlene Thompson (Wilmington, N.C.) and Heather Childress (Mechanicsville, Va.) both added three hits while Haley Brogden (Mount Olive, N.C.) (11-9) earned the complete game victory.

Barton junior designated player Sierra Hearp (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) opened the scoring with an RBI double while freshman shortstop Mikayla Rose (Beaufort, N.C.) scored a run and drove in a run in the losing effort.  Senior Makayla Meeks (Greenville, N.C.) (3-11) tagged with the loss for the Bulldogs.

Game Two – Mount Olive 6, Barton 0
The Trojans were clinging to a 1-0 lead before putting the contest away with a five-run fifth inning.  Childress and Barrera both finished with two hits and two runs batted in as Mount Olive completed the sweep.  The Trojans' Mallory Ratcliff (Fredricksburg, Va.) (10-6) threw a four-hit shutout while striking out six batters and Hearp (6-5) was tagged with the setback

Barton looks to rebound with a road conference doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m., against Belmont Abbey in Belmont, N.C., while Mount Olive takes on Shaw in a doubleheader on Monday, April 15, at 1:00 p.m., in Raleigh, N.C.
