GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Barton softball team (13-14, 3-1) split a Conference Carolinas doubleheader with Limestone (10-12, 1-3) Sunday afternoon at Babe Ruth Field. The Bulldogs fell in the first contest by an 8-3 score before rallying to salvage the split in the nightcap, 9-4.
Game One – Limestone 8, Barton 3
The Saints broke open a close contest with a five-run sixth inning highlighted by a two-run single by Kat Tate (St. Stephen, S.C.) while Vic Brewington (Walterboro, N.C.) added two runs batted in as well. Limestone's Caroline Ruth (Waxhaw, N.C.) (7-4) picked up the complete game victory while striking out 10 batters.
Game Two – Barton 9, Limestone 4
The Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie with a five-run fourth inning highlighted by a bases-clearing double by junior pitcher Sierra Hearp (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.). Hearp finished with four runs batted in and earned the victory on the mound while improving to 4-1 on the season.
Barton senior Hannah Jones (Huntersville, N.C.) earned her first save of the year after holding the Saints scoreless over the final two innings of play. Meanwhile, Knapp drove in two runs in the victory. The Bulldogs – clinging to a 5-4 advantage – put the contest away with four runs in the top of the seventh.
Limestone's Lindsey Mason (Irmo, S.C.) also cleared the bases with a double and finished with four RBI but Sydney Sullivan (Jefferson, S.C.) (2-6) was tagged with the loss.
Barton next travels to Florence, S.C., to take on Francis Marion in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 21, at 6:00 p.m., while Limestone hosts UNC Pembroke in a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
