WILSON, N.C. – The Barton softball team (2-6) salvaged a doubleheader split with Catawba (7-3) Friday afternoon at Jeffries Field. The Bulldogs fell in the first contest by a 7-2 score before shutting out the Indians, 1-0, in the nightcap.
Game 1 – Catawba 7, Barton 2
The Indians were powered by home runs from Preston Ellenberg (Leland, N.C.) and Allie Baker (Kannapolis, N.C.) in the win. Ellenberg hit a two-run round-tripper in the opening frame while Baker rounded out the scoring with a three-run shot in the sixth frame.
Senior infielder Jessica Onega (Belle Glade, Fla.) and sophomore second baseman Jordan Blake (Jackson Springs, N.C.) drove in runs in the bottom of the third to tie the contest at two but Barton was kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
On the mound, Ellenburg improved to 3-0 after going the distance while senior Hannah Jones (Huntersville, N.C.) fell to 1-4 on the year after taking the loss for the Bulldogs. Sophomore outfielder Hayley Grizzle (Rocky Point, N.C.) finished with three hits and a run scored to lead Barton.
Game 2 – Barton 1, Catawba 0 (six innings)
Barton senior Makayla Meeks (Greenville, N.C.) (1-1) threw a four-hit shutout while striking out six batters as the Bulldogs managed the split. Jones scored the lone run after crossing the plate on an Indian error in the first inning.
Catawba's Brooke Walser (Thomasville, N.C.) fell to 2-2 after suffering the loss despite allowing just one unearned run in addition to striking out four batters. The game was called in the sixth inning due to darkness.
Barton next hosts Charleston (W.Va.) on Sunday beginning at Noon in a doubleheader while Catawba hosts Belmont Abbey in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m.
