WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College men's and women's cross country teams have a six-race schedule planned for the 2017 season.
Barton will kick off the year on Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational hosted by Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.
Beginning on Friday, Sept. 15, with the Adidas XC Challenge in Cary, N.C., the Bulldogs will compete in three events in a span of two weeks. Over that stretch, Barton will also visit Wingate University for the Bulldog Stampede on Saturday, Sept. 23, and will take part in the Royals Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte, N.C., on Friday, Sept. 29.
The race at Wingate will also serve as a preview of the course site for the 2017 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional, in which Barton will compete on Saturday, Nov. 4.
Before regionals, Barton will battle its league foes in the 2017 Conference Carolinas Championships, which will take place on Friday, Oct. 20, at Frank J. Liske Park in Concord, N.C. Barton's men placed fifth and the women finished sixth in last year's championship.
For the first time in five years, this year's schedule will not include a home meet. The Bulldog Cross Country Invitational will not be held due to construction work at J. Burt Gillette Athletic Complex.
"The team has some great leadership returning this season, and I'm looking forward to seeing their confidence continue grow and capitalize on last year's success," said head coach David Nicholson, who will begin his second season leading the BC cross country and track programs. "We will be younger this year, but I'm confident some of our freshman can make an immediate impact. I am excited for the cross country season to set the tone for another great year."
