Men’s volleyball wins 10th league match with 3-0 victory over Belmont Abbey

WILSON, N.C. – Barton completed a sweep of the season series with Belmont Abbey, defeating the Crusaders 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon in Wilson Gymnasium.

The win was the 10th victory in Conference Carolinas play for Barton who improved to 12-4 overall on the season. Belmont Abbey fell to 2-11 with a 2-8 mark in the league. Barton registered a .453 hitting mark, its fourth above-.400 performance in a row, and committed just seven errors. In contrast, Belmont Abbey struggled at the net, hitting .167 as a team.

Barton had just two total errors across the first two sets of play, hitting over .510 as a unit to gain an early 2-0 lead.

Momentum carried into the third set for Barton, which led 4-1 before Belmont Abbey took an 8-7 lead. A kill from sophomore Justice Lord tied the set at eight points apiece as BC used a 10-3 run to build a 17-11 advantage.

The Crusaders put together a 10-5 run of their own late in the set to pull with a point of tying the score, but kills by Vasilis Mandilaris, Aleksa Brkovic and Charles Hyde sealed the win for Barton.

Freshman Angelos Mandilaris led all players with 12 kills and hit .500 in the match, while Brkovic hit .647 with 11 kills and five digs.

V. Mandilaris followed with 10 kills and five digs of his own, as senior Federico Pagliara turned in 31 assists. Fellow senior Jonathan Novoa-Miralles led the team with six digs on defense.

Barton will have almost two weeks off before returning to the court against Erskine College on Friday, March 17 in Due West, S.C.
