WILSON, N.C. – For the second straight outing, the Barton men's volleyball team picked up a straight-set victory, this time a 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-22) win over Emmanuel (Ga.) College in Wilson Gym.
Barton improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in Conference Carolinas with the victory, while the Lions fell to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in league play.
The first set of action was a back-and-forth affair in the early going before consecutive kills from sophomore Vasilis Mandilaris and senior Jonathan Novoa-Miralles put BC ahead by three points. Emmanuel twice got within one point of tying the set but a Mandilaris kill ended the frame with Barton ahead.
BC carried its momentum over into the second for a convincing 13-point victory. The Bulldogs began the period with a 7-2 run, building their lead to a 20-11 advantage after an ace from sophomore Nick Leary. Barton scored the set's final five points to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
Barton once again led early, this time by a count of 5-1, to build a comfortable lead in the third set. The Lions continued to battle, cutting the deficit to one point multiple times but could not overcome the BC offense.
Mandilaris led all players with 12 kills, four service aces and nine digs, while sophomore Justice Lord chipped in 10 kills of his own. Leary contributed eight kills and three service aces, as senior setter Federico Pagliara registered 31 assists and five digs on defense.
The Bulldogs continue their current five-game homestand with a league contest against Limestone College on Friday, February 10 at 7 p.m. in Wilson.
