HIGH POINT, N.C.– Barton College's Rafael Ruiz Velasco has been named the Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the fourth week of the season, the league announced Tuesday.
The Madrid, Spain resident was 2-1 overall in singles play and posted an identical 2-1 record in doubles play in three non-conference matches.
Following a loss at No. 1 against West Virginia Wesleyan, Ruiz Velasco rebounded with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 1 over Shaw University's Daniel Ac. His week concluded with a 6-1, 6-2 win as the No. 2 singles player in a match against Lenoir-Rhyne University on Sunday.
In doubles play, the senior won by identical 8-5 scores in the No. 1 spot over West Virginia Wesleyan and Shaw playing with teammate Jesus Gil. The duo fell 8-6 to Lenoir-Rhyne in the lone loss of the week.
The player of the week recognition is the second straight honor of the season and third overall of Ruiz Velasco's career. He received the award last week and was also honored once during his freshman year his way to Conference Carolinas All-Conference Second Team honors. It is also the third straight player of the week award for the Barton men's tennis team this season as Jake McCartney earned the honor following Week Two.
Barton returns to Conference Carolinas play this afternoon when it hosts Limestone College at 2 p.m. at the Barton Tennis Complex.
