ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Barton College men's swimming team won three events and set three school records during a dual meet with NCAA Division I program Howard University on Saturday at the Harrison Family YMCA.
The Bison claimed the meet, 135-66, to register its fifth straight victory so far this season.
Freshman Jaksa Gabric led the way for the Bulldogs, winning the 100-yard individual medley in a time of 54.05 seconds and the 50-yard backstroke in a time of 24.93 seconds. His effort in the 100 IM broke teammate James Day's 2016 BC record of 58.69 seconds.
Gabric also established a benchmark school record in the 50-yard breaststroke, as Barton competed in the event for the first time in the program's brief history. The Zagreb, Croatia, resident set the benchmark at 27.83 seconds.
A second benchmark school record was set by sophomore Luis Reyes in the 50-yard butterfly, a mark of 24.29 seconds recorded during a runner-up finish.
Day accounted for Barton's third event win on the day, taking first place in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:48.89. The sophomore from Essex, England, added a runner-up finish in the 100-yard freestyle with his mark of 49.09 seconds, and anchored Barton's 200-yard freestyle relay squad, which placed second in a time of 1:30.62. Day was joined in the relay by Reyes, Robert Zamorano and Harrison Strutz.
Zamorano collected a runner-up finish individually as well, touching the wall second in the 1000-yard freestyle event with a time of 10:32.01. He added a third-place showing in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.35).
The Barton men will host Hampden-Sydney College in a 1 p.m. dual meet on Saturday at the Harrison Family YMCA.
