WILSON, N.C. – Seniors Alex David and Austin Tausch each scored a goal, while junior keeper Jens Madsen Hordvik made two crucial saves with 20 seconds left in the match to seal a 2-0 win over Lees-McRae College on Saturday afternoon at the Barton Outdoor Athletics Complex during Homecoming Weekend.
With the win, Barton moves its overall record to 4-10-1, while posting a 2-5-1 mark in Conference Carolinas play to keep its postseason hopes alive. Lees-McRae fell to 3-11, 3-5 with the road loss.
After a scoreless first half of action, David scored his team-high fourth goal of the season in the 47th minute of play. The Raleigh, N.C. native collected a teammate's missed shot that hit the cross bar and finished the goal with his left foot to put BC ahead 1-0.
The Bulldog defense packed it in and kept the Bobcats off of the scoreboard for the remainder of the half despite a number of opportunities, the best of which came with 20 seconds remaining in the game.
Following a hand ball in the box by a Barton defender, Lees-McRae was awarded a penalty kick and a chance to tie the match. However, Thomas Deeley's shot was turned away by a diving save from Hordvik who also turned away another shot off the rebound to preserve the win. Hordvik totaled seven saves in earning his first clean sheet this year.
Barton used the momentum from the defensive stop to translate into the team's second goal of the night as junior Danny Peru sent a ball upfield to Tausch who scored on an empty net with four seconds remaining for his second goal of the season.
BC travels to rival University of Mount Olive on Tuesday, Oct. 25 for its next match before closing the regular season on the road against King University in Bristol, Tenn. on Saturday, Oct. 29.
