The Tornado, ranked 21st by Golfstat in NCAA DII, carded a sensational 1-over par 289 in raw, cold conditions on Monday and followed that with a 9-over 297 on Tuesday to finish at 586 and hold off hard-charging Barton by four shots. The host Bulldogs, ranked 20th nationally, shot 300-290-590 behind even-par rounds of 72 by senior Daniel Claytor and junior Nicolas Fonseca and 73s by sophomore Austin Doerr and freshman Edward Thomas III. Senior Michael Marshburn finished at 77 for Barton's A team, which was denied its third straight Intercollegiate title. The Barton B team posted Tuesday's second-lowest round at 292 after carding a 321 on Monday. Sophomore Brian Quilter posted a sensational round of 4-under 68 on the 6,851-yard layout. His collegiate low round included seven birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. He hit 13 of 14 fairways and 12 greens and needed but 25 putts. Sophomore George Shenas added a 74, juniors Micah Lawrence and Dermot McElhennon fired 75s and freshman Richard Moore II shot 77. Erskine College, ranked 31st and a fellow member of Barton and King in Conference Carolinas, finished just one shot behind the Bulldogs, taking third place at 294-297-591. Conference Carolinas members North Greenville (299-301-600) and 24th-ranked Mount Olive (307-294-601) rounded out the top five. Brevard (310-299-609) and California University of Pennsylvania (303-307-610) were sixth and seventh, respectively, followed by Barton B. The medalist was Virginia Intermont senior Trevor Banks, who fell two shots shy of the tournament 36-hole scoring record of 9-under held by Barton's Claytor and McElhennon. Banks, ranked second nationally in all of college golf while playing in the NAIA ranks, won for the 15th time in his career by carding 70-67-137 (7-under). Second place went to overnight leader Brad Thorne of Erskine (69-71-140) while King's Richard Powell claimed third at 73-71-144. King also counted a 73 from Leennawat Numpituckchaikul, a 76 from Ross Maietta and a 77 from Taylor Gouge. John Scott added an 82. Numpituckchaikul and Maietta finished tied for 8th overall at 3-over 147 and Gouge was 13th at 148. Doerr's final round included three birdies and four bogeys for the Bulldogs. He hit 11 fairways and 12 greens and needed 31 putts. His 73-73-146 tied for fifth place overall. Claytor (75-72-147) and Quilter (79-68-147) tied for 8th and Lawrence tied for 18th at 74-75-149. "We just really put ourselves behind the eight ball with a poor first round on our home course," 16th-year Barton head coach John Hackney said. "However, I was really proud of the guys today as they bounced back with the two best team scores. If only one player had gone low on the A team, we could have won, but that's the way it goes. King set itself up for the victory with a great first round and held us off. We had all 10 of our players shoot between 68 and 77, so that shows great depth. Brian was on fire out there today and I thought both Austin and Micah had solid tournament showings. Claytor and Thomas burned a lot of edges with putts, so they were close to having really good final rounds. Fonseca, Shenas and McElhennon cut 28 shots total off their combined scores from Monday, so I was glad to see that, and Moore posted the best round of his young career at 77." Only four players broke par on Monday while 10 shot better than 72 on Tuesday. Brevard's Kim Koivu fired 68 on Tuesday, N.C. State's Andrew Decker fired 69 and Mount Olive's Sebastian Andersen and Mark O'Hara each notched 70. Ross Earnshaw of Post and Josh O'Neal of North Greenville notched 71 apiece.
