CONOVER, N.C. – Barton College leads a talented 17-team field at the NCAA Division II South/SE Super Regional Preview after posting a team score of 290 in round one of the tournament Monday at Rock Barn Resort and Spa.

The Bulldogs also sit at the top of the individual leaderboard after 18 holes, as freshman Bryson Boyette leads the event following an opening-round 68 and junior Justin Plane rests in second place following an opening-round 70.

The tournament is being contested on a difficult 6,635-yard, par-72 layout which will host the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional next May.

Boyette, a hometown resident of Wilson, N.C., and a former Fike High School standout, carded six birdies in recording the tournament-leading 68, the low round so far in his freshman season. Plane, a resident of Whitby, Canada, followed with his third 70 of the year in helping the Bulldogs into the lead.

Barton also received a 74 from junior Logan Zimarino and a 78 from senior Travis Broome in making up its team score of 290. The Bulldogs were able to drop the 89 turned in by junior Scott Pechacek.

The Bulldogs are five strokes ahead of second-place Lincoln Memorial, which was ranked No. 21 nationally in the Bushnell Golfweek Preseason Coaches Poll. Coker College is another stroke back in third place at 296, followed by a trio of programs at 297.

Three players are tied for third place individually, one shot behind Plane and three back of Boyette.

The final round will be played on Tuesday morning beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
