Barton stays in D2SIDA Southeast Region Poll at No. 10

by Benny Benton

MIAMI – A pair of victories over the weekend – one of them against a regionally-ranked opponent – were enough to help Barton College overcome an early-week loss and remain in the D2SIDA Southeast Region Poll for another week in the No. 10 spot.

The Bulldogs (2-3) posted a 74-66 win on Friday over Virginia Union University, at the time ranked No. 7 in the Atlantic Region, and added a 79-73 win over Saint Augustine's University on Saturday in University of Mount Olive's Pickle Classic.

Those triumphs were enough to help Barton atone for giving away a double-digit lead in an 86-82 road loss at Elizabeth City State University on Tuesday and keep BC in the poll, which is administered and voted upon by Division II members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Barton dropped to No. 10 from No. 8. Francis Marion University (3-0), making its first appearance in the poll this year, moved into the spot previously occupied by the Bulldogs. Mount Olive (3-1), which like Barton beat Virginia Union and SAU in the Pickle Classic, joined the poll in the No. 9 spot.

The top three spots remain unchanged for a third straight week. Queens University (5-0) and Lincoln Memorial University (3-0) continue to share first place in the poll. Each team received three first-place votes and 57 total points. Despite its first loss of the year, UNC Pembroke (2-1) maintained the No. 3 spot.

Carson-Newman University made the big move of the week, jumping three spots to No. 4 after improving to 4-0 on the year. The Eagles surpassed Augusta University (2-1) and Columbus State University (0-1), which both lost their only contests of the week. Barton's fellow Conference Carolinas member, Limestone College (3-1), also slid one spot to No. 7 after going 1-1 last week.

Dropping out of the poll were last week's No. 9, USC Aiken, and the two teams tied for tenth, Wingate University and Newberry College.

Barton will visit the poll's No. 3 team, UNC Pembroke, on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. matchup. It will be BC's third game of the season against a regionally-ranked opponent.
