Barton baseball suffers 6-5 setback to Mount Olive on second day of the league tournament

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Barton baseball team (31-19) saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end with a 6-5 loss to Mount Olive (30-13) Friday night on the second day of the 2019 Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament at Ashmore Park.

The Trojans' Junior Snow (King, N.C.) broke a five-all tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with the game-winning, run-scoring double as Mount Olive rallied from a 4-0 deficit to remain in the winner's bracket of the tournament.

Barton senior designated hitter Juan Martinez (Weston, Fla.) hit a two-run home run – his team-leading eighth round-tripper of the year – while junior shortstop JoJo Allen (Clarksville, Tenn.) added a pair of hits and an RBI double in the losing effort.  Junior Colby Shimmel (Windsor, Pa.) (5-4) was tagged with the loss for the Bulldogs.

Joe Mason (Morehead City, N.C.) and James Smibert (Misissauga, Ontario, CANADA) hit home runs for the Mount Olive while Seth Houston (Virginia Beach, Va.) (1-1) earned his first victory in relief and Jake Isbell (Holly Springs, N.C.) retired the final eight batters for his second save of the year.

Barton, the second seed in the tournament, will now take on fifth-seeded Belmont Abbey (26-23) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., in an elimination contest while third-seeded Mount Olive faces top-seeded North Greenville (38-9) on Saturday morning beginning at 11:00 a.m.
