TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Barton baseball team (10-6, 0-1) suffered a 16-1 loss to top-ranked North Greenville (7-3, 1-0) in the Conference Carolinas opener Friday at Ashmore Park.
The Crusaders broke the contest open with a nine-run fourth inning highlighted by home runs from John Michael Faile (Boiling Springs, S.C.), Josh Senter (Lexington, S.C.) and Adam Sasser (Evans, Ga.) in the frame. Sasser led the way with a game-high five runs batted in.
North Greenville limited Barton to just four hits on the day while the Bulldogs finally got on the board when junior pinch hitter Trevor Edior (Los Angeles, Calif.) crossed home plate in the top of the ninth inning.
North Greenville, which finished with 17 hits on the day, received the win from Tucker Burgess (Liberty, S.C.). Burgess (2-1) allowed just three hits over five scoreless innings while striking out seven batters. Barton junior Jakob Ryan (Carrollton, Va.) fell to 2-2 after taking the loss.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a Noon doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
