WILSON, N.C. – The Barton College baseball team (8-5) split a doubleheader with Mercy (N.Y.) (1-3) Sunday on a chilly and rainy day at Nixon Field.  The Bulldogs won the first contest by an 8-6 score while the Mavericks held on to win the nightcap, 9-8, to salvage the split.

Game One – Barton 8, Mercy 6 (seven innings)
Trailing by a 2-1 score, the Bulldogs took control and broke the contest open with a seven-run third inning highlighted by a two-run single from junior second baseman Shawn Harrison (Queens, N.Y.).  The Bulldogs also scored three times on wild pitches in the frame.

Mercy tried to rally thanks to a bases-clearing double in the seventh inning courtesy of Nicholas Pellegrino (Garden City Park, N.Y.) but Barton junior Fredrick May (Folsom, Calif.) struck out the final two batters for the save.  Senior Dylan Ward (Laurinburg, N.C.) (1-0) pitched three innings of relief to earn the win.  Mercy's Jack Kelly (Scranton, Pa.) (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

Game Two – Mercy 9, Barton 8 (seven innings)
The Bulldogs – trailing by a 9-2 score – tried to rally with three runs in both the fifth and seventh innings but the Mavericks were able to hold on for the win.  Mercy's Alonso Tenya (Lima, PERU) pitched the final inning to earn the save.  The Mavericks starter, Fernando Figueroa (Bayamon, PUERTO RICO) (1-0), was credited with the victory.

Barton sophomore pitcher and designated hitter Colby Warren (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) hit a two-run home run – his team-leading third of the year – to go along with four runs batted in while junior shortstop JoJo Allen (Clarksville, Tenn.) added three hits and three RBI in the setback.

Mercy's win in the second contest snapped Barton's four-game winning streak.  Warren (0-3) was tagged with the loss.

Barton remains at home to take on Piedmont International at Noon on Tuesday in a doubleheader while Mercy plays Stonehill on Thursday, February 21, at 6:00 p.m., in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
