MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Freshman Alec Seaton delivered a pinch-hit run-scoring single for the Barton College Bulldogs, but it wouldn't be enough as the Chowan University Hawks used a 10-run second inning en route to recording a 15-1 non-conference victory on Tuesday in baseball action.

Barton (10-28) stranded nine runners on base in the contest and failed to get onto the scoreboard until the top of the eighth inning. Chowan (12-14-1) recorded six home runs including a pair from Harry Markotay. The Hawks would score all their runs between the second and fifth inning.

Junior Gatlin Pate went 1-for-2 at the plate for the Bulldogs, while freshman Colby Warren delivered his sixth double of the season for BC. Freshman Charlie Horne went 0-for-2 at the plate but scored a run while drawing a pair of walks for Barton.

Markotay went 3-for-4 in the lead-off spot for the Hawks and finished with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Marquise Lanier tallied a pair of hits for Chowan including a grand-slam to go along with three runs scored. Tyler Jones recorded three RBI and three hits, while Nick Rose, Robert Williams, and Trenton Lee each notched three-hit games for the Hawks.

The Bulldogs would strand a two-out baserunner in the top of the first inning as Pate singled to right field against Chowan starter Cody Smith. Freshman Mason Cooper responded for BC by working around a lead-off double by Markotay to send the game into the second inning scoreless.

Cooper started the second frame at the plate with a walk and would move to second two batters later as freshman Zach Long would be hit by a pitch from Smith. The Hawks worked out of trouble as Smith got Horne swinging at strike three to end the frame.

Chowan would send 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning as the Hawks took a commanding 10-0 lead in the contest off the strength of three home runs and nine hits. The Hawks tallied a pair of runs in both the third and fourth inning to increase the lead to 14-0.

The Hawks capped their scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning as Williams delivered a solo home run to left center to make it 15-0 Chowan. The Hawks would strand a pair of runners on base as BC recorded a pair of groundouts to end the frame.

Horne started the top of the eighth inning with a walk and would later advance to second on a wild pitch. With two outs in the frame and Horne standing on third base, Seaton sent a 1-1 pitch into left field to plate Horne and get Barton onto the scoreboard.

Junior Ryan Pifer and junior Chase Long would keep the Hawks off the scoreboard over the final three innings of the contest as the pair allowed just two hits and recorded three strikeouts. Freshman Alex Hart (0-6) suffered the loss for Barton after starting the bottom of the second inning. Smith (2-3) tossed five innings of two-hit baseball for the Hawks and fanned seven batters while issuing just one walk. Vinny Puma, Daniel Whitener, and Jared Moore combined to toss three scoreless innings of relief for Chowan.

Barton returns home to open a three-game Conference Carolinas series against Emmanuel College on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Bulldogs will host the Lions for a pair of games on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
