HIGH POINT, N.C. – For the second time this season, the Barton baseball team took home both the Conference Carolinas weekly awards. Senior shortstop Calvin Hawke was honored as the Player of the Week, while junior pitcher Trent Fennell earned Pitcher of the Week honors as announced on Tuesday.
Both players collected their respective awards for the first time in their careers, but the Bulldogs took home both awards following Week Seven earlier this season.
Hawke was a key component of the Barton (25-16, 10-11 CC) offense that swept regionally ranked Erskine College over the weekend at Nixon Field. The Wendell, N.C. native turned in a .500 batting average (6-for-12), including two doubles and a triple. He also scored seven runs and drove in four RBI while walking four times without a strikeout to his name.
For the season, Hawke leads the league with a .445 batting average and is tied for second with 61 total hits, while ranking third overall with 19 stolen bases.
Fennell improved to 6-1 on the season with a complete game victory over Erskine on Saturday afternoon. The right-hander was dominant on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings, allowing just one unearned run on three hits.
The Dunn, N.C. native now has 84 strikeouts to his credit, a mark that currently ties the Barton single season record set in the late-1990s. Fennell is 6-1 on the year with four complete games and a 3.31 ERA over 68 innings of work.
Barton hosts non-conference opponent Chowan University today at 2 p.m., before welcome league foe Southern Wesleyan University to Wilson for a three-game series during the weekend.
