WILSON, N.C. – The Barton Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has selected Angelica Acevedo of the women’s volleyball team and Michael Boykin of the men’s basketball team as the recipients of the SAAC Athlete of the Month Award for November.

Acevedo, a sophomore setter, orchestrated the Barton offense to a 5-1 record in the month of November, including a Conference Carolinas North Division title and the program’s first ever Conference Carolinas Tournament Championship. Over six matches, Acevedo totaled 237 assists (11.85/set), while also recording 65 digs (3.25/set) and 13 total blocks. Her performance in the Conference Carolinas Tournament earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team as the event’s Most Valuable Player.

Boykin, a freshman guard, began his collegiate career on a high note, winning MVP honors at the 51st Annual Pickle Classic hosted by University of Mount Olive. The Clinton, N.C. resident totaled 14 and 19 points, respectively over the weekend to lead Barton to a tournament title. Boykin averaged 12 points the season’s first six games, shooting 48.9 percent from the floor, 40 percent from the three-point line and 83.3 percent from the charity stripe. He also contributed 2.8 assists per game and led the team with 1.5 steals on defense.

The Barton College SAAC seeks to provide leadership in the athletic program for the 2016-17 academic year.  The Committee includes two representatives from each of Barton’s athletic teams and including its two advisors totals 30 members.

SAAC members will be asked to review proposed NCAA Division II legislation to be considered at the NCAA Convention held each year and comment as to the impact of each proposal on student-athlete welfare and a suggest voting yes or no.  Committee members will also act to communicate with teams they represent, sharing ideas with them from SAAC meetings and taking information and concerns from teammates to the committee.  In the broad context of the NCAA Division II philosophy of Life in Balance, service on the SAAC is intended to be a significant leadership opportunity.
