WILSON, N.C. – The Barton Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has selected Riley Bane of the women’s volleyball team and Justin Plane of the men’s golf team as the recipients of the SAAC Athlete of the Month Award for October.
Bane, a red-shirt sophomore libero, has been a steady presence on defense for the Lady Bulldogs who were 9-0 during the month of October and are currently riding a 12-game winning streak. Over nine matches, Bane totaled 135 digs (4.50/set), while also serving up 20 aces and handing out 16 assists. She currently third overall in Conference Carolinas with 412 total digs and second with 4.58 digs per set.
Plane, a sophomore, was the low scorer for the men’s golf team over three matches played during October. The Whitby, Canada, resident turned in an average score of 72.1 over seven rounds played and finished in the Top 20 each weekend. His month was highlighted by a 36-hole career-low in the Barton Invitational at Northgreen with a two-day score of 140 and a runner-up finish.
The Barton College SAAC seeks to provide leadership in the athletic program for the 2016-17 academic year. The Committee includes two representatives from each of Barton’s athletic teams and including its two advisors totals 30 members.
SAAC members will be asked to review proposed NCAA Division II legislation to be considered at the NCAA Convention held each year and comment as to the impact of each proposal on student-athlete welfare and a suggest voting yes or no. Committee members will also act to communicate with teams they represent, sharing ideas with them from SAAC meetings and taking information and concerns from teammates to the committee. In the broad context of the NCAA Division II philosophy of Life in Balance, service on the SAAC is intended to be a significant leadership opportunity.
