WILSON, N.C. – The Barton Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has selected Kianna Wynn of the women’s basketball team and Larry Russell of the men’s track & field team as the recipients of the SAAC Athlete of the Month Award for January.
Wynn, a sophomore forward, averaged a double-double of 21.2 points and 10.4 rebounds and shot 56.6 percent from the field to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 6-4 record. The award is the second straight honor for Wynn.
She had five games where she scored at least 20 points or more, including a career-high 38 points in win over Converse College. Wynn also pulled down at least 10 rebounds in eight contests and ended the month with seven consecutive double-doubles.
Russell, a sophomore, set numerous PRs over the course of three meets during the month and was named the Conference Carolinas Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 24.
In the team’s first meet of the new semester, Russell improved upon the high jump record he shared with a leap of 1.95 meters as well as a top-five in the high jump (4th of 17) at the Art and Linda Maillet Open, which was held at the University of North Carolina.
Russell also posted two national top-10 performances in the Wake Forest Invitational at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Sicklerville, N.J., resident ranks fifth in NCAA Division II in the high jump after his mark of 2.10 meters, which won the meet event in a field of 20 competitors. He also ranks eighth nationally in the long jump following his effort of 7.33 meters, which placed third among 39 participants in the meet. He ended the month by finishing seventh out of 20 in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.71 during UNCG Dual Meet Madness.
The Barton College SAAC seeks to provide leadership in the athletic program for the 2016-17 academic year. The Committee includes two representatives from each of Barton’s athletic teams and including its two advisors totals 30 members.
SAAC members will be asked to review proposed NCAA Division II legislation to be considered at the NCAA Convention held each year and comment as to the impact of each proposal on student-athlete welfare and a suggest voting yes or no.
Committee members will also act to communicate with teams they represent, sharing ideas with them from SAAC meetings and taking information and concerns from teammates to the committee. In the broad context of the NCAA Division II philosophy of Life in Balance, service on the SAAC is intended to be a significant leadership opportunity.
