ELON, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed this past weekend at the 2019 Phoenix Invitational – hosted by Elon University – at the Irwin Belk and Dr. Alan & Norma White Field Complex.
On the men's side, Barton junior Micah Clemons (Greenville, N.C.) won the hammer throw (179'5") for third meet in as many competitions this spring. Clemons also took eighth place in the shot put (47'4") while sophomore Chianti Ghee (Fayetteville, N.C.) finished ninth in the discus (136'5").
Other top-ten finishes for the Bulldogs in the men's competition included sophomore Greg Gibbs (Newark, N.J.) in the 800-meter run (10th, 1:59.26) and sophomore Nicolas Leek (Manahawkin, N.J.) in the 1,500-meter run (sixth, 4:13.92).
The Barton had several strong performances in the women's races highlighted by a second-place finish in the 400-meter relay (47.89). The quartet included freshmen Danyetta Ruffin (Newport News, Va.), Taylynn Blunt (Hampton, Va.) and Takeitha Glaspie (Goldsboro, N.C.) and sophomore Syaani Harris (Ashland, Va.). Not to be outdone, Blunt was also sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.96 seconds.
Glaspie also took seventh place in the 100-meter dash (12.49) and 10th place in the 200-meter dash (25.85) while Harris crossed the finish line in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.57, good for 10th-place overall as well for the Bulldogs.
Finally, Barton freshman Abira Reddish (Durham, N.C.) placed fourth overall in the women's 400-meter dash (1:00.48).
The Barton outdoor men's and women's track and field teams return to competition on Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20, at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
