
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Barton men's and women's swimming teams stand in first and second place, respectively, after Thursday's competition at the 2019 Conference Carolinas Championships at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center.
The Bulldogs' men's team has totaled 319 points – 94 points clear of Emmanuel (Ga.) – while the Barton women's squad (274 points) is second behind Emmanuel (282.50).
Barton sophomore Nicola Macdonald (Durban, SOUTH AFRICA) won the women's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:12.33. In addition, freshman Adalaya Nemitz (Waxhaw, N.C.) was runner-up in the women's 200-yard individual medley (2:08.14).
In a time trial this morning in the women's 50-yard freestyle, Barton sophomore Kleanza Cathers (Kitimat, British Columbia, CANADA) earned an NCAA Division II "B" cut time with a 23.85.
The Barton men's team finished second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:24.10. The relay team consisted of freshman Tegan Brown (Acworth, Ga.), sophomore Jaksa Gabric (Zagreb, CROATIA), freshman Jonathan York (Midlothian, Va.) and junior James Day (Essex, ENGLAND)
After the first short session on Wednesday, both the Bulldogs' men's and women's teams were leading with 153 and 131 points, respectively.
The men's 200-yard medley relay – consisting of junior Michael Cutidioc (North Hills, Calif.), Gabric, junior Luis Reyes (Ocala, Fla.) and sophomore Harrison Strutz (Plymouth, Wisc.) – was the top conference team with a time of 1:32.93.
Barton also placed first in the men's 800-yard freestyle relay (6:51.97) which featured the quartet of junior Robert Zamorano (Woodstock, Ga.), Day, York and freshman Colton Spence (New Hill, N.C.). York was the runner-up in the men's 1,000-yard freestyle (9:44.17) as well.
On the women's side on the first evening, Cathers won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:49.47 for the Bulldogs.
The competition continues Friday with third day and second full day of events at the league championships.
